Top 3 Things to Avoid When Setting Up a Therapy Private Practice in the UK – Lessons From My Own Experience

Starting my own therapy practice in the UK was both exciting and daunting. I was finally stepping into the autonomy I’d dreamed of, but I quickly realised that being a skilled therapist doesn’t automatically make you a skilled business owner.

Here are the top three mistakes I made when setting up—and what I wish I’d known from the beginning.

1. Adopting a Business Approach From Day One

When I started out, I was focused on helping people—not running a business. But the reality is, private practice is a business. I didn’t set clear financial goals, track income and expenses properly, or think much about things like branding, cash flow, or pricing (and I had no process for putting up prices annually).

If I could go back, I’d treat the practice as a business from the outset.

2. Trying to Do Everything Myself (Especially Admin and Marketing)

In the early days, I tried to manage it all—answering emails, updating my website, handling GDPR compliance, you name it. I thought I was saving money by doing it myself, but I was actually draining my energy and missing out on clients because my time wasn’t well spent.

I got professional help with SEO and my marketing strategy—clients started finding me more easily after that.

3. Not Setting Clear Boundaries With Clients

This one took a toll on my mental health. I wanted to be flexible and supportive, so I offered evening slots, replied to emails at odd hours, and took on every appropriate client. Now, I have firm boundaries:

Clear working hours and response times

A written contract that outlines fees, cancellation terms, and confidentiality

Clients respect you more when your boundaries are clear—and it protects the therapeutic relationship too.

Final Thought: You’re Not Alone

Setting up in private practice is a huge leap, but it doesn’t have to be a lonely one. Talk to other therapists, join local networks (like your BACP regional group or on Facebook), and invest in CPD that covers the business side of therapy too. Every misstep I made was a learning opportunity—and hopefully, sharing mine helps you avoid them.

**I’ll be running a comprehensive and interactive workshop on this and much more on Friday 27th June, from 10am until 1pm. Check out the flyer and come and join us!**
